Nitsuj Wonders...

Magic used it because all the good above-the-curve cheap creatures at the time it was coined were various animals like apes and lions.

Re: How does money work 2.0

Another thing to remember is that when people want to move the SF, they want to move to SF. There aren't that many other replacements (maybe Seattle, Portland, NYC, Boston, LA, Chicago, Boulder depending on what they want from SF). If someone just wants to live somewhere cheap, there are tons and to...

Re: How does money work 2.0

Why do people not buy in places like Pittsburgh that have dirt cheap houses and plenty of jobs? Say you are 21, and you just graduated with a degree in Computer Science. Facebook offers you 110k a year plus a bonus which will be worth almost 200k in five years. (The average salary for a programmer ...

Re: riddle

So I actually do a problem very similar to this in my class, here is the difference: "A 100 prisoners are lined up single file, they each will have a red or blue hat placed on their head, they will not be able to see the color of their own hat, but will be able to see the color of every hat in fron...

Re: riddle

nevermind. think i got it each wizard should submit the answer that constitutes the majority color of the remaining 99 hats Slight problem. If there are exactly 50 red and 50 blue, you won't see the one you are wearing. Everyone will see 1 more of the other color, and all 100 die. This is the wizar...

riddle

If a wizard sees 50 hats of one color and 49 of the other, each wizard guesses that their hat is the opposite color of the one in the majority. If a wizard sees that >=51 hats of one color and <=48 of the other, each wizard guesses that their hat is the same as those in the majority. Should guarant...

It doesn't matter. They're not going to do something physical, they just need the right strategy of what to write down.

Re: riddle

There are some awesome math puzzles that have amazing problems and are true head scratchers, the problem with a lot of them is the answers are very unsatisfactory. Here's a decent one which is fun but not too hard: The sultan decides to test his hundred wizards. Tomorrow at noon he will randomly pu...

6 fives
5 sixes
2 sevens

I did a quick computation and came up with 5.375. I might have missed some of the symmetries though.

WiseMarsellus wrote:does the finite width of the pizzacutting robot's blade mess that up in any way though?
It's a math problem, so the blade has no width. If it did, then the answer would depend on all sorts of silly things about the physics of cutting.

Re: riddle

Couldn't you have a minimum of 2 or 3 if any of the cuts are on top of each other. Nothing stipulates that couldn't be done. Obviously low percentage but those are the min. We seem to all believe the intention of the possible is to arrange the cuts as Blarg stated in a format such as ABCBAC In whic...

Re: riddle

are aabbcc and ccbbaa the same thing? i think yes, right? From the standpoint of the answer, yes they are. But you have to count them separately to determine the probabilities. What are the same are things that are just rotations of each other, like aabbcc and bbccaa. If you brute force it, there a...

Re: riddle

I'll give an example with two cuts, labelled A and B. If the points are in the order AABB or something like that, the cuts don't intersect and you get three pieces. If they are ABAB the they do intersect and you get four pieces.

The point is that it is now a problem in finitary combinatorics.

Re: riddle

To make three cuts, the robot picks, independently, three pairs of points on the circumference, for a total of six points. The number of pieces should depend only on the order those points are in around the circumference.

In my experience most articles published in the last ten or so years, at least by younger researchers, are available online for free on a preprint server or the author's webpage. This one, for example, is available at: https://scholar.princeton.edu/sites/default/files/mgilens/files/gilens_and_page_2...

Actually I'm going to have to reschedule. But yeah I'd be ok with that.
