European MPC 17th February 2018

Post by Shadow 14 »

The MPC has been a successful tournament in the USA for awhile, and we would like to give it our try for 2018 in Europe.
Netherlands will get the EC in 2019 and Bochum has the EC every other year, so we looked for another city.
I tried Berlin but due to lack of good locations and volunteers it was just not gonna be. So, it's my hometown Hannover now.
It is within a decent reach to Denmark, Poland and some other communities.
Hopefully will also motivate all the players that usually come to Bochum.

The fixed/confirmed date is 17th February 2018, and the location is booked. We have a huge extra room with big tables!

Please register till 21st January, if you want to participate! We will start the pairings after that and post the complete list on 1st February latest!

Tournament Location:
Waldgasthaus Entenfang
Eilersweg 1
30419 Hannover - Germany
http://www.entenfang-hannover.de (German website only)

Recommended Hotel Location:
Mercure Hotel am Entenfang
Eichsfelder Str. 4
30419 Hannover - Germany
https://www.hotel-am-entenfang.de/

Hotel Price:
60-85 Euro per night for a twin room.
Please check booking.com and others for special offers. I have seen as low as 50 € per night. Some prices also include breakfast.

Tournament Price:
25 Euro per player. Pre-pay via paypal to cmenzel@hadewe.de (list your full name and "Euro MPC".
Please pre-register by paying the amount till 20th December 2017 to receive an official, special exclusive foil AI-slip.
If you pre-register by paying the amount till 20th November 10th December 2017 you will also receive a special LS deck box.
Pre-registering will help us plan ahead, since this special event requires some preparation. Payment counts as confirmation.

MPC (Match Play Championship) requires 16 or 32 players, and there will be elimination rounds. There will also be consolation and side events.
So, you will definitely play 6-8 games of SW that day/weekend.

Planned Schedule for 32 players:
10:00:
In the first round players will meet pre-selected opponents (chosen by a jury) and 32 players will meet in 2 games of 1 hour 15 minutes each (DS/LS).

13:00:
The 16 winners will proceeed to the second round of the MPC, playing 2 more games of 1:15 each (DS/LS).
The 16 losers will immediately start a "Consolation MPC" and will also play 2 games of 1:15 each (DS/LS).

15:30:
The 8 winners of the MPC will proceeed to the third round of the MPC, playing 2 more games of 1:15 each (DS/LS).
The 8 winners of the Consolation MPC will proceeed to the second round of the MPC, playing 2 more games of 1:15 each (DS/LS).
The 16 players that have been eliminated from the MPC and Consolation will start a Cube or Sealed tourney with 3-4 games a 45 minutes

17:00:
There will be an optional dinner buffet (soup, salat and 2-3 warm dishes) for 15 Euro/per player, if we are over 20 players.
Otherwise it will be served a la carte.

18:00:
Round 4 of the MPC will start for the top 4 players
Round 3 of the Consolation MPC will start for the top 4 players
Cube or Sealed event continues, and we could start something else, but by then every-one has had at least 6 games.

20:30:
The Final confrontation will start with a 1,5 hour time limit (can be played online or next day, if players agree).
Everybody else drinks a few.

Schedule might vary depending on the number of players. It will be within one day, so that players can leave for home on Sunday.
We may offer sightseeing or side events for Sunday later. Maybe also a German National, if we get enough players.

Confirmed (pre-paid) players so far:

I am interested! I have to make a trip to Germany (Stuttgart) this year. I get to choose when I go. I would like to plan this trip to be able to attend the MPC in Berlin and then catch a bus or something to Stuttgart.

I will most likely go if it's in Berlin. Unless it's a snowfall like last time.

Berlin is great to visit. I have no basketball game that weekend so that is a big plus. I already notified the Dutch players to see if there is any interest.

If it were the weekend before and in Berlin then I would be 100% in. As it stands I would most likely not be able to make this weekend as there are no flights available after work on the Friday.

If it is in Berlin, I might come. No offense to people from Hannover, but I wouldn't go there. :???

I have just checked the flights to Berlin on this weekend. Very promising if I was to book sooner rather than leave it for a few weeks.

Also the cheapness of the current prices means I could not be alone..... more of Team Wales could follow.

I live here, and I wouldn't go! ;)

Unfortunately, it looks more and more like it might be Hannover. I've had zero success with any of the venues I've tried.
Further, none of our Berlin colleagues has deemed to respond to any of my messages. :(
While I understand the advantages of doing this in Berlin, it becomes very difficult to realize this without some local help.

So, better start checking, if Hannover would also be an option for you guys.

Machchaster:
Manchaster - Hannover - Fr., 23. Feb. 2018 with Flybe
17:50MAN - 20:40HAJ - 1 St. 50 Min.

Hannover - Manchaster - So., 25. März 2018 with Flybe
21:10HAJ - 22:05MAN - 1 St. 55 Min.

Birmingham:
Birmingham - Hannover - Fr., 23. Feb. 2018 with Flybe
17:45BHX - 20:30HAJ - 1 St. 45 Min.

Hannover - Brimingham - So., 25. März 2018 with Flybe
21:50HAJ - 22:45BHX - 1 St. 55 Min.

Copenhagen has similar options with SAS, but I assume people might drive, since it's closer than Bochum.
It's actually better for the farmers.

Utrechts is a 3,5 hour drive.

Hannover is possible... the price is currently £50 more than to Berlin but flights always fluctuate in price.

How's the beer in Hannover? this could be the deal breaker ;)

Berlin would be great, and the date is very fine with me / Alexandra.
So while I can't be sure 100%, count me in as of now

Strong preference for Berlin for me too, Hannover will be more complicated to get organised. Maybe Julian can help out? And organise a Silence is Betrayel concert in Berlin in the same weekend? :-D
Edit: flights to Hannover seem to be in the same price range as Berlin from Brussels, so no issue there for me.

I'd be definitely in for Hannover, and at about 50-50 for Berlin.

Actually, Hannover is pretty nice if you know where to go (which is a bit harder in February), easy to get around in and easy to get to, too. It's Germany's northern railway hub, it's got an airport with cheap flights.

Ok, at this point we need a miracle to make Berlin happen.
None of the venues were suited for or purpose (400 Euro minumum from 10:00-18:00, which would require us to book for 2 days).
Neither of the Berlin guys is really interested in helping out with the tourney either. At least 1-2 would go to Hannover, though.

I really didn't want this to be in Hannover, but since I looked so much at Berlin locations, I was kinda focused on tourney space.
So, I was at a restaurant recently, and they had a big room ideally for playing, so I asked. Not for the specific date, but in general.
Room rate was ok. They have food and drinks and a hotel right next to it for 85 Euro for a twin room (incl. breakfast).

What I need now is at least 16-18 people confirming here that they'd come, so that I can go to the venue and close the deal.
