Re: Two Format Changes

Post by mryellow »

I hadn't kept up with the discussion and didn't know about the format changes for Saturday/Sunday. I wasn't involved with the 6-2 playoff games but going into Day 3 I thought the new top 4 vs bottom 4 format was a positive change. It was different figuring out decks for a small field rather than a single opponent and I think the pool of Day 3 decks wasn't as bizarre as normal.

Good job!

I don't really have too strong of an opinion on the top 4 vs bottom 4 thing. I think I'm against it because it clearly helps top players and hurts Cinderella stories but it's not a huge deal.

My opinion on the play-in game is much stronger. I'm very against it. I believe that everyone I spoke to about it this weekend had a negative opinion on.

I think SoS does a way better job of putting the correct people in the top 8. In fact the play-in games here were superfluous since SoS predicted both winners.

well that would be only 18.2% of the players in the tournament, so that's not very conclusive.

So I equal 1.4% of the players this weekend. I liked the play in idea. I think if you go 6-2 you should get an opportunity to make Day 3. In the early rounds, it’s quite random who you get paired with and can throw off SoS.

I'm very curious to hear from the four people who played in the play-in games about their opinions.

Me too :) They (along with a few others) will be receiving a survey shortly, although they can of course discuss it here as well.

I love the play in, and pretty much everyone I talked to think it was a good idea.

The intrigue builds!

Are Joe & Jarad the two brothers, one of whom cannot lie and one of whom cannot tell the truth?

It put better players at risk of not making it by fluke loses to inferior players in an unscheduled half of a round.

It was like the wild card game in baseball.... except you only play half the game.

Wait, but they have the same record so why are they better players?

Because players with a higher SoS played better to get those wins than players who back doored in.
