Donations for John

Post by gogolen »

One of the things also announced at the event today- we will be collecting donations (cash on site, or via paypal) until Tuesday night and then making a donation to a Leukemia charity in John Anderson's name.

The PC will match the donations collected, up to $500.

If you would like to make a donation and are not at the event (or prefer to do it online)- please up the Donation link on the Home page- https://www.starwarsccg.org/donations/

and please just include a note that this is for John.

Also, if you earned a travel voucher this summer, you can also use that as a donation instead if you wish (just PM me that you want to donate the voucher)

Just a quick update on this, as we are off to a good start.

(edit- donations being removed to remain anonymous as many people have requested. Sorry for not thinking about that part sooner)

We have reached our goal of $500 from the players, which the PC would then match to make it a $1000 donation!

We will still be collecting donations until Wednesday, as we would like to be able to pass along the final information of our donation to John's family in time for his services.

Have you picked a charity? Personal stance but I like to check for vetted charities before I donate, which I plan to.

We are in the process of doing just that. Ryan Jellison mentioned he works with a UCLA-based charity, and will be sending us some information once he gets back from Worlds.

removed names as people requested, sorry for not thinking about that part initially.

But with a few additional donations, we just hit $500 from the players!

For those that don't know, I am the head of database development for the office of research administration at UCLA. One of the things I handle is data for our school of medicine and I thought if we wanted we could create a tribute page for John.

Ryan's suggestion lead me to look up similar patient donation options at the University of Minnesota. Something that didn't occur to me before I read his suggestion.

My understanding is that part of John's treatment was at the University of Minnesota, and so this seemed like it would be more personally relevant to him, and to his family. What I found was this page:

https://makingagift.umn.edu/give/fund.h ... XXUMGGIVEW

Specifically. Top row, second from the left.

Another location where John received treatment was Sanford Health Group in Fargo, https://sanfordhealthfoundation.org/donate/. Although I think they are a private health group and so the ethics of donating to them rather than a public university is a bit iffy I think.

I was on the phone this morning with a friend of mine who works in giving for the University of Minnesota. He pointed me to this spot on the University’s giving website: https://makingagift.umn.edu/give/fund.html?id=11459. This fund is specific to Leukemia and Lymphoma research. After we add the fund to the basket, we can note that it’s in memory of John Anderson.

Quick update, we are now over $1000 in donations from the players! While most of you want to remain anonymous, just know that I know who you are and want to say thank you for your contributions.

Do we have a charity yet to look into?

Cheers!

We have discussed it and believe that its best to make our donation to the University of Minnesota Leukemia and Lymphoma Research fund.

It has a personal connection to John, as he did some of his treatments through their facilities.

https://makingagift.umn.edu/give/fund.html?id=11459

As its a university, there isn't much data available to research about their financials, except for the University's annual report (which is available online and is 87 pages long).

Our intention is to continue accepting donations through the weekend, and then send the funds on Monday.

If anyone has any concerns, please post them here.

Am I correct in assuming that because of this post there will be a second set of donations going out later?

The plan is to donate next week with what we have. If anyone donates anything in person at LTM events (this is not a requirement or special request for the events, but in case some people prefer to donate in person), we will donate that too. Next year, there will be an event (or series of events) in his memory, which I'm sure will collect a significant donation as well.

final reminder, will be sending the donation tomorrow. I am happy to report that the players have donated over $1600, and combined with the $500 match from the PC we will be able to make a nice contribution to this fund!

Thanks again to everyone who contributed!
