The Jawa Cup

Post by SWCCG Jawa Cup »

Announcing the 2019 Jawa Cup!

You've heard of the OCS, you've heard of the Outrider Cup, you've heard of the GeMPC, but I'm here to tell you all about the most exciting event to hit Gemp this Fall. The Jawa Cup!

The Jawa Cup will be a 6-week, 6-game swiss tournament on Gemp using Strength of Schedule that will run from 3 November to 14 December. This event is open to all players not playing in the Top 16 OCS Playoffs or Outrider Cup. The catch? You may not play the top decks that were played at Worlds. That means the following cards cannot be in your deck for games in this tournament:
Yavin IV: Massassai Throne Room
The Galaxy May Need A Legend / We Need Luke Skywalker
Diplomatic Mission to Alderaan / A Weakness Can Be Found
They Have No Idea We're Coming / Until We Win, Or The Chances Are Spent
Old Allies / We Need Your Help
I Want That Map / And Now You'll Give It To Me
Raltiir Operations (v) / In The Hands Of The Empire (v)
Agents Of Black Sun / Vengeance Of The Dark Prince
Court Of The Vile Gangster / I Shall Enjoy Watching You Die
By popular vote: Like My Father Before Me

As mentioned above, this will be a 6-game Strength of Schedule event with weekly pairings. As such, if you are not able to find a time to play with your opponent for one of the games, you will receive a warning (and you will receive a score of 0 for the week). A second missed game will result in you being dropped from the tournament. After each game, I am asking that the winner report the score via PM/e-mail and provide a Gemp replay link for the game (only to keep track of matchups).

At the end of the 6-game tournament, the top 8 will have a playoff to determine the Jawa Cup winner. (Top 8 will have the same rules as the tournament itself).

HOW DO I JOIN?
Great question. Please answer the following questions. Please either PM your answers to this account, or e-mail them to swccgjawacup@gmail.com. The deadline for entering is 2 November at midnight EDT.
1. Name?
2. Gemp Screen Name?
3. E-mail address? (I will not use this for anything other than sending out pairings or reminding people to play games)
4. Time Zone?

Each Sunday, I will send a mass e-mail with pairings. Please contact your opponent and find a date/time to play by 6am EST time on the following Sunday (ex. Pairings for Game 1 will be sent at ~9AM EST on 3 November, please complete games before 6AM on 10 November). I will also post the pairings in this thread a separate thread, hopefully in its own forum.

Other information:
You may switch decks between games. For example, if you play Yavin IV Operations in Game 1, you do not have to play the same 60 cards (or even the same objective) in your next LS game. Your games played might look like this: CCT (game 1), QMC (game 2), Profit (game 3), CCT (game 4), MKOS (game 5), QMC (game 6).

I'm not 100% sure if someone will be able to set up an actual Gemp league for the event, so if one is not set up, please use the Casual games and make a note that it is a Jawa Cup game in the description. If any bugs occur, please play them as they lie. (If you believe your opponent is somehow abusing something in the game because of known bugs, please let me know, and provide a replay link). If there are any other questions that come up, I will answer them here.

Write-in questions:
Should we also ban IAYFv? I don't think so. I don't think its as ubiquitous as LMFBM.
Do we get extra points for playing Jawas? No, but don't let that discourage you!
Will time outs run the same as OCS playoffs (ie timed winner receives win equal to life force)? That sounds reasonable to me. If your timer runs out, your opponent wins by his total left in life force. This is now a moo point because it has been changed to SOS.

This event is open to all players not playing in the OCS Playoffs or Outrider Cup
To clarify, not open to current OCS players, or anyone who qualified? Like if someone already got bounced in a humiliating blowout against a 3x world champ, are they still ineligible?

Just asking for a friend.

I assumed that the OCS Playoffs are the top 16 OCS players? Would be good to get a confirmation.

I will accept responses to the question below until 27 November, and if > 50% of players want the card banned, then it will be banned.
Should update the OP to say 27 October, not November.

That's what I'd assume too, but wanted to check because this sounds ridiculously fun with that ban list. Either way, look forward to seeing what decks people come up with.

I will fix top post tonight for October/November.

I will also update re: prizes, final 4, and deck switching between games.

Sorry Ryan, get worse at Star Wars cards apparently. But, look forward to the as yet unnamed tournament after the Outrider Cup that will mirror this. (Also I'm happy to play against you with these rules on some/all of the weeks because I'm not playing either).

I am bummed (and pretty surprised) that Invasion is on the Ban List.

But I'm still in!

Yeah why is this? Is it based on the top Saturday decks? Top Sunday decks? Neither had invasion. IE and TTO were present in those fields but aren't banned.

It is based on most played decks on Saturday at Worlds.

The ban list is pretty solid and will make for an interesting meta of tier 2 and lower decks. I’m really looking forward to it.

(*) Only if your opponent loses an equal number of points.
* Congrats if you read through my whole post. Have a cookie, it's in your cache.

They might look like similar cards, but they are really quite different and IAYF doesn’t warp the metagame in even close to the same degree as LMFBM. I would be strongly against banning IAYF.

I know they aren't direct mirrors but it seems silly to let IAYF stay if we are taking out LMFBM. IAYF looks much stronger once LMFBM is out. Why not make it balanced with just sai tor and blaster rack?

It does? Is there a new destiny 6 Vader that I missed? Are we also looking at killing Jedi Business and They Will Be No Match For You (v)? Frankly, looking at the power level of IAYF mostly makes me feel like LMFBM is a sick joke.

That’s maybe a bit of an exaggeration. I think the main point is that LMFBM has had dozens of pages spent on it in the CB forum, and this might be the first time I’ve seen it suggested that IAYF is overpowered. I don’t even think there’s consensus that IAYF is the best DS mains deck, but there’s no such disagreement about LMFBM.

And, there’s a simple reason we’re not balancing the weapon puller effects around Blaster Rack or Sai Torr: they’re bad and we can do better.

There will be decks that get elevated. The meta will not be perfectly balanced. Play fun decks, have fun playing. It will be a blast.
