I think the quality of play is just better now with GEMP out. People can play more. People can watch more. Playing a lot of games is a good way to get better. Playing them against good competition just makes you that much better. GEMP has opened SWCCG play to the likes of Magic Online years ago.

x2. The proof is in the pudding, looking at some of the records of objectively great players. Desai at 3-5, Bastian at 2-4, wirfs at 4-8, etc.

No disrespect intended to any of those guys -just the opposite; can't imagine any of them being sub-.500 at a real life major. But the margins between the the great and the good, and the good and the average, are getting smaller and smaller in online play.

I agree with CK that it's arguably harder now to get a top 16 spot than making a top 8 cut. If for no other reason than having to essentially win 11 out of 12 games (opposed to 6 out of 8), with much more potential for a random "any given Sunday" match-up that can derail your entire month.

I can't really quantify that without it being small data size errors (we've only had 2 years of OCS first months). :-D

It is pretty easy though to quantify GEMP raising the quality of play. I think this year will be harder than the last, which was harder than the first.

Wasn't trying to disagree with you on it though. Just adding to your observation with mine was all.

You can also look to big events like Endor GP where Stubbly did really well. The Euro players are getting more games in and are more than holding their own. I'm sure there are other examples as well. Its really crazy to see how good the "average" has become now compared to years past.

Re: 2020 OCS Scoreboard Watching

Post by gogolen »

so let's see how some of the numbers look:

2018- 1 at Large bid created, earned by Chris Kelly (222 pts); Total points earned by the top 16 - 2538 over 8 months

2019- 2 automatic at large bids, and 1 created- earned by Gavin(204 pts), Batmouse (198) , Gogolen (198). Total points earned by top 16 over 7 months - 2974

The 2019 at large players average about 28 pts per month, so if there was an 8th month, they all would have likely had a higher point total than CKs 222pts from 2018. (226+)

Seems reasonable to conclude that the overall level of play has increased, and project that 2020 will be harder to qualify than previous years.

Only a few days left this month, don't forget to hit your 8 game threshold to get at least 1 foil card.

By my count there were five 11-1 performances that didn’t qualify in 2018 & 2019.

3 were in Feb 2018 - the first, free month that had 120 signups.
4th was Silverglen Feb 2019.
5th was Gavin in July 2019.

Possible more instances this month...

So, yeah, I agree.

In reality it appears that maybe only 2 people are currently undefeated and might 12-0. However what is currently most surprising is there is only one person at 11-1.

It is super hard to even go 11-1 in a month. I have lost games to bad matchups or random crazy beatdowns. I think the best month I had last year was 10-2 once, so I know it is tough.

That being said... saving my last 3 games for the crazy final week when all the top players are trying to finish their games... win or lose it's the only way I have a chance to qualify, is winning all 3 and beating other high win %. This is of course assuming multiple people do not finish 12-0 as well.

6 days left!

jnapolit31 11-1 (46.09%)
tge_damen 10-0 (20.95%)
wcullen 9-1 (51.06%)
retwin316 8-1 (43.96%)
aeneas23 8-1 (32.69%)
PMcPherson 8-0 (44.30%)
al 4-0 (15.91%)
aermet69 3-1 (38.46%)

Minimum 4 games played, <= 1 loss

tge_damen and PMcPherson are in with win-outs.
If either of them falter, wcullen in the driver's seat with a strong SOS%.
retwin316 and aeneas23 need to boost SOS% and those above to lose games.

Tom should clinch a spot with a final win, but there's a lot of x-1s that should make the second bid very interesting.
I probably need to win. 11-1 won't be enough with my low SOS.
