Are V-cards always better than the underlays?
Are V-cards always better than the underlays?
Hi, back into the game after a 25 year break. Quick question, are the V-cards almost always better than the cards that underlay them, or should i try to obtain doubles of those cards?
Im not playing competitively but i still like to play by the tourney rules
Thanks for your time

Welcome!
V-cards are not always better than their base cards - however they are usually designed to go over cards that aren’t very good and see little play (and there’s generally little overlap in decks that will use the standard or virtual version). One of the few cards you might need two of is Haven.

Daughter of Skywalker (v) is worse than the underlying card in every situation.

Yeah it’s pretty case-by-case, mostly when it’s a half-slip, keeping the name but changing the game text. You may need to check those to see which version is better. Admiral Ozzel, Arica, and Darth Vader are good examples of that. Grand Admiral Thrawn is a rare instance where the underlying card is quite good and is an underlying card for two virtual cards, and one is usually worse than the underlying.

Very seldom will you have the non-virtual and virtual version of the same card in a deck, but it does happen. Having a card and a virtual card that uses it as an underlying image in the same deck is more common.

I ran into an AITC deck a while back that used Dash as its rep, and both versions of Dash were in the deck.

My CCT ran both Any Methods Necessary V and non V, non V obviously being a starting interrupt and did alright at worlds.
One of the nice cases where a foiled card was super helpful for me in GEMP, as I would often pull the V card with Boba's search text to keep him or jango alive from a weapon targeting, the V card is foiled in my GEMP deck so it's an easy visual recognition.
But yeah, in general very rare that you are running copies of a V and a non-V card.

Imperial Decree always comes to mind for me. Both reduce damage against you in different ways. It's not unique so you could even play both in the same game.
Prepare For A Surface Attack is an example where you might use either card depending on what you're trying to do, but it's unique so you would need to pick one.

I've had both Vigos in AOBS at times.
