Board Games

Post by Cam Solusar »

Hey all, I've got some Amazon money burning a hole in my pocket and I was planning on spending most of it on board games. I've got my eye on 7 Wonders, which I've played a bunch of times with friends but do not yet own. I'm probably going to pick up the Leaders expansion for it as well. Was hoping to pick up 1 or 2 more "casual/gateway" games, ideally no more than $10-15 apiece, that might be more appropriate for a non-gamer crowd.

I currently have the following in my game library:

Battlestar Galactica + all expansions
Catan + Seafarers
LOTR Risk
Old Skool Risk
Pandemic
Tsuro
Ticket To Ride: Europe
Dominion
Munchkin + all expansions
Carcassonne
Citadels
Star Fluxx

In that price range, but something like cards against humanity.

A bit more than 10-15, but any of the deck building games like DC or Marvel. Heard Marvel dice was good. King of Toyko and the others are easy and fun.

Machi koro is great but without expansion is ridiculously unfun.

DC deckbuilder is fun.

Great entry games are red dragon inn and abyss imo.

Also ubongo is insanely fun and casual friendly
Well, Bye.

Resistance/Avalon are the best games ever.

Not actually a huge fan of Resistance. Maybe I'd enjoy Avalon a bit better, but I like a bit more strategy to my paranoia games.

Avalon is the same but has additional roles that add both depth and lots of complexity that generally makes it not newbie friendly.

That said I had more fun with Avalon at worlds than anything else I played
Well, Bye.

You guys are doing it wrong.

Agree with Maven. Since I played that game it's been like crack for me. If my local friends got into it and were any good, you guys may not ever hear from me again.

Chris's question about type of crowd is a good one.

I have a pretty sizable collection, and have found that For Sale is probably one of my most successful gateway games, and it can play up to 6, which is pretty handy when you are at a family function with a lot of interested players. I'm not sure if that is in the $10 to $15 price range though.

Resistance is one that I'd like to get my hands on and Bonanza is another "gateway" that I'd suggest, but I don't have it. Each time I've played it though, I have enjoyed it.

If you got up to the typical $40 to $50 dollar range then Zooretto or Aquaretto are pretty solid intro games along with Alhambra (which I find is fairly similar to Ticket to Ride if you are starting to get board with it).

Lords of Waterdeep would complement your collection nicely, as it is a worker placement game, and you it does not look like you have one of those. However, it has a really geeky theme which can turn off some people. But it is pure cube-gathering-euro.

coup is a great card game, avalon (that's the king arthur werewolf game?) is great too. I didn't really like the Leaders expo to 7 Wonders, it always felt like the leaders were traps esp first turn because they deplete your gold, unless you get the bonkers rome board.

Good call Nitsuj, Bohnanza is great. Also check out Codenames for a great party game. It's relatively new but fantastic and scales well to larger groups. Honestly I wish I was going to the MPC just to play that with some nerds.

The list in the op is pretty good. I'd recommend Risk 2210 over old school risk (it cost more but way more fun).

Shadows Over Camilot is a good cooperative game (like pandemic).

Dominion is good and scales to larger groups.

Did someone mention Bang?

Legacy is even better than 2210, if you have the same group and no OCD people. There are several DBGs better than Dominion, but you should have your favorite in your collection, I agree.

No set group; just want to have options. My wife doesn't really like playing games (or at least is resistant to sitting down and playing them) so I wanted to find some options that are more newbie-friendly.

Codenames is amazing. Played it 3 different times in the last few weeks, with different groups, and everyone loved it and had a great time
