Ranking the New Canon Books

Post by Hutch »

I’ve recently gotten around to reading some of the New Cannon books. I’m on book two of the Aftermath series. Despite not having familiar characters at the center, it’s growing on me. I also read Bloodline and really liked it. Which have you read and which do you consider good or bad? I didn’t include Young Adult books or Graphic Noveks in this list, but think this is all of the new ones:

Catalyst
Dark Disciple
Lords of the Sith
Tarkin
Thrawn
A New Dawn
Heir to the Jedi
Battlefront: Twilight Company
Aftermath
Aftermath: Life Debt
Aftermath: Empire’s End
Bloodline

My power rankings :

Bloodline

(A very large gap)

Aftermath

Hopefully I'll read more at some point.

And then there are other people who walk out literally saying that was the worst movie I've ever seen. Having those two extremes to me is the mark of the type of movie that I want to make.

I loved Dark Disciples... Then Dark Lords.... Tarkin was solid. I absolutely hated Aftermath.

Lost Stars was surprisingly good.

I've only read Thrawn and Bloodline. Both were good. I think Thrawn was better.

This would be the current list of mine which I've "read". Some are the young readers (which as expected aren't typically as good), but most aren't. I know I have ahsoka, battlefront 2, A certain point of view, and catalyst on wait list.
  1. Thrawn
  2. Tarkin
  3. Lords of the SIth
  4. Dark Disciple
  5. Catalyst (partial completion)
  6. Bloodlines
  7. Lost Stars
  8. From a certain point of view (about 65% of the stories are enjoyable).
  9. Heir to the Jedi
  10. Phasma
    ...
  11. Battlefront II: Inferno Squad
  12. Battlefront: Twilight Company
  13. The Perfect Weapon
    ...
  14. Aftermath: Life Debt
  15. Aftermath
  16. Aftermath: Empires End
  17. The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure
  18. Canto Bight
  19. Smuggler's Run
3-7 are all about even for me. I would love discussion of some of these though.

In particular, I don't mind the story of aftermath (although it could have been done SO MUCH better), but whenever I stopped reading it, went to another author, and came back to it was just painful.
Tarkin and Battlefront:
Spoiler

Both of these have a lot of background at the beginning which is a little hard to get through. It proves useful for the book though, especially for Tarkin.
Also, I know it just came out but has anyone read "From a certain point of view" yet? I loved the tales from mos eisley (and similar) and I feel this book will have some similar flavor/feel to it.

The first person writing of "Heir to the Jedi" is rather annoying. Eventually I was okay with it as it let you get into Lukes head more, but so much first person isn't great.

the phasma comic book series was entertaining (except for the random 3-panel flashback that didn't make any sense)

I am enjoying "From a Certain Point of View". Some of the stories are awesome, some are silly..

They all take place against the backdrop of A New Hope... I would recommend a read. if for nothing else its really fun in a SWCCG backstory kind of way. Like having a short story on a bunch of the Premier cards...

Phasma was good, Thrawn was good.

Lost Stars probably the best of the new books.

For lost stars,

I really feel like the last chapter should have been flipped with the chapter before it. It felt to end oddly whereas the chapter before would made it end awesome.
For certain point of view, did you read any of the old "Tales from..." series in EU? I expect it'd be similar (which I liked) but wasn't sure with different authors.

Why is no one bringing up the Legends of Luke Skywalker?!?!

I don't read ever, but I'm like 130 pages into this. Cost $10 on amazon.

So far the book is pretty drawn out at parts but has had some decent reveals including
Spoiler
Show
Luke’s role in the battle of Jakku, learning how to survive on a water/island planet with birds, figuring out about the force and how it’s not about using just one side of it, and why his right hand doesn’t have the flesh covering on it. ... and definite foreshadowing with the line that “someday you’ll be pestered by a student as persistent to learn what you do not wish to teach.”

Because it came out 10/31/17?

Yeah, that was 2 weeks ago!!! And it's a fast read. If anyone wants to shorten it even more, I can definitely recommend just skipping the interludes and skimming the stories until Luke shows up. There's lots of cool nuggets and foreshadowing stuff in the stories that take place post-ROTJ, but not much value in the other stuff.

Now I'm onto Leia. Less excited about this one, but now my brain seems to be on a reading kick.
