Coronavirus

Post by shawnd1984 »

Has this affected anyone?

I will say, if it's still a thing come MPC, I will not let people cut my deck, and verification will take place by slaying reseve in front of my opponent. No touching! :-D

One of my cohosts on my movie podcast just got back from Italy, so we have to delay our in person recording until the end of the month. Super lame!

I have been greatly affected. I was supposed to spend almost the whole month in Europe on the government's dime. First, my week in Italy got cancelled. Then, mere hours before I was to fly to Nice, France for two weeks, the Minister of Health in the country I'm living in declared a mandatory two-week self-quarantine for any coming into the country from France, Italy, Germany, and four other countries, so the powers that be ordered me to stand down.

Coronavirus, eat a big bag dicks.

Unless the spread stops, I'm most likely gonna gonna miss my first first MPC in 13 years :(

I've also pulled my children out of school.

Right now, we're discussing plans to do work from home (quarantine). We're good so far. But yeah, glad I'm not in California.

I've found it's more exciting if you pretend that Coronavirus is T-Virus, the Umbrella Corporation's zombie disease.

Case in point:

Plane ticket I bought last week for MPC was $231.

Now it is https://www.priceline.com/m/fly/search/ ... 9013452%7C

We homeschool, and we're in rural Pennsylvania, so the only thing we've had to contend with so far is stocking up on some basic supplies in case there does end up being a quarrantine. Still, who knows what will happen in the coming weeks.

My grandmother passed away in Beijing last week. She did not have the virus but had a heart attack, but they could not treat her in time because the hospital was overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients. My mother just returned from China after my grandmother's funeral and now has to be quarantined in her home in NY for 2 weeks and she will miss the birth of her first grand-daughter.

This is not a fake virus or something that should be taken lightly. And frankly I'm starting to get annoyed about the amount of trivialization taking place.

Nothing has changed in my life so far.

EDIT: Thought of something. The zoo closed part of their indoor exhibit, and the library put the kids toys away. So it has affected the wife/kids a small amount.

@mingtown I'm very sorry about your grandmother. And also, congratulations on the upcoming birth of your daughter (or niece? I can't be sure from your post).

Please keep in mind that many people use humor to help cope with very serious and scary topics. I was joking about the zombie thing, and I give marines the benefit of the doubt that he was calling it imaginary as a joke.

WA State DSHS canceled basically every meeting and our upcoming audit got canceled so work is even slower than usual right now. We're laying pretty low at home and in general the community is taking it pretty seriously (rightly so) as the town I'm in has a large elderly population. Basically everything but the stubborn ass school has closed down or greatly reduced hours. We homeschool but also live next to a bunch of kids in the public school system, so that is kind of obnoxious, especially considering that our little neighborhood is also home to a few elderly folk.

Not panicking, but preparing. I do live on an island so if it gets bad enough that they shut down the state run ferries, we'll have to be self sufficient for a couple weeks, so we're keeping that in mind.

Flu is very widespread and has a mortality rate around 0.1%

Coronavirus is not widespread (yet) and is believed to have a mortality rate around 3.4%

Source for both: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2 ... omparison/

It kinda looks like Coronavirus is going to become widespread. We don't know for sure, but it's pretty scary.

(edit: fixed a spelling typo)

This article does a good job of comparing the two. I've seen this stance a lot and I get it, but it really doesn't take the whole picture into account.

Also that flu death number is a little misleading, as it counts all the way back to October 2019, not "this year" as in 2020.

My main response to this factoid, since it is usually left with little context, is sure. Now wouldn't it be awful if there were two flu-like viruses killing people every year?
