Old Man Habits

Post by shawnd1984 »

Trying to kick off a thread.

What is something you do that is usually the vestige of much older people? I have a ton, but here's one for example.

I save chicken carcasses and make my own stock.

I wander around the house late at night. Related, I will often fall asleep in a recliner after making a cup of tea. Also, the wife and I sleep in different bedrooms because we both snore very loudly.

This is a good example. I had grandparents that had separate beds (same room though).

Wife (fiance at the time) and I used to do this too, but she made me go get a sleep study and turns out I had pretty bad sleep apnea. I've been sleeping with a CPAP the past decade or so and it's hard to imagine how I went for so long without one.

As far as old man habits, I'd say it's lecturing people on Internet forums about sleep apnea and CPAP machines.

Both her parents use CPAP machines...

Sleeping in separate rooms is also related to the way we're always on different schedules and I get claustrophobic

I go to the public library, check out compact discs, and then rip them onto my computer for later consumption. That's less old man, but still old man enough. Checking out music from the library.

Same, it's two blocks from my house. I probably wouldn't go if it wasn't so convenient.
check out compact discs
Same, but only started late last year. My new year's resolution was to become more musically literate by listening to a wide variety of albums ranging from decades ago to modern.

It was going really well until the library closed down for Covid-19. I think they have digital checkouts but I had been listening in my car on my commute to work, and I don't have a commute anymore.
and then rip them onto my computer for later consumption.
I haven't had any interest in saving any of it to revisit again later.

I think the "old man habit" would actually be sleeping in the same room with your wife.

Believe I heard somewhere that over 50% of new American homes are now being built with Dual Master Bedrooms. Couples sleeping separately is probably more popular in the US now than it has ever been before.

I learned how to shave with a straight razor because it is so much cheaper and more masculine.

Tried that for a while. Scared the hell out of me each time that I’d cut myself badly. Have poor hand-eye coordination generally (why I ran vs played baseball in high school) and doing it backwards in a mirror is just worse.

There is a learning curve to it (there was for me), and I bought a styptic pencil to stop bleeding (and boy, does it sting). The worse cut I got was on my knuckle when I was trying wipe off my blade. However, I haven't cut my face in a long time now.

I wear my Members Only jacket if it’s brisk outside when I go for my walks.

I take Metamucil in the mornings and Simvastatin for my cholesterol and Fish Oil for my Triglycerides.

I take the long way on drives for the scenery.

I vote Republican.

I know it’s a fact that Harley Race & Ric Flair were better wrestlers than John Cena & Roman Reigns.

I like listening to Baseball games on the radio.

There are few shows I prefer to The Andy Griffith Show.
