Questions about an outdated video game system...

Post by shawnd1984 »

I am looking to buy a used Wii U and a few games (Mario Galaxy 1-2 and Legend of Zelda). I know very little, obviously. A few questions.

Mario Galaxy is originally for Wii i think. Wii U is backwards compatible, so if i buy the disc, i can use it right? Or can you just download online?

Where is a reliable place online to purchase a used Wii? I looked at Ebay, and the prices are fine, but is it reliable to purchase there?

Are there any accessories that I need to look for as well?

Yes, the Wii U is backwards compatible with Wii games. Just pop the Wii game disc in and play as normal.

Ebay is fine for consoles, just make sure the seller has a decent rating % and sales history. Also look for listings that show the unit has been tested and working.

The Wii U will play all the original Wii games.
There is no option to download games. Nintendo didn't understand the Internet in the Wii era. There used to be a virtual console system where you could download classic games for the NES, however Nintendo shut that system down when the Switch came out.
The Wii and Wii U use the same controllers.
To play the Mario and Zelda Wii games you will need a Wiimote and a Nunchuck. Make sure you have a motion sensor bar to place on top of the TV. Also be sure that he have the Wii U gamepad. The device is essential to operating the Wii U.
I highly recommend Twilight Princess. It was a fantastic Zelda game and you will love it if you liked Ocarina of Time. I didn't care for Skyward Sword. The motion controls are used for sword fighting and I just didn't care for it.
Also checkout Hyrule Warriors and Breath of the Wild for the Wii U.
Yoshi's Wooly World is a really fun, and chill, game for the Wii U as well.
I recently bought an extra Wii U from Goodwill and it works great.
I believe the price at GameStop is appropriate for a secondhand Wii U.

Good luck!

Thank you gentlemen!

So to clarify, a wii u will include the wiimote? Or will this and the nunchuk need to be acquired separately? Same goes for the sensor bar and wii pad?

The pad should be included. It's not a Wii U without it. Usually the sensor bar comes with the Wii U.
The Wiimote and the Nunchuck will probably need to be acquired separately. Just pay attention to the listing to ensure you get all the bits.

I would recommend that you find a used game shop locally. That way you have someone to go to if you get it and it doesn’t work. A WiiU system is the box, the sensor bar, and the tablet. If you’re going to play Wii games, you’ll have to buy wiimotes.

I also highly recommend Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Wii U. Huge maps to explore. Tons of side-missions. Easy to play at your own pace. Just a great game

Do i need a special controller for the Wii U? I purchased one on ebay, with the standard included stuff (thanks Corran!).

Just to clarify - you can download Wii U games. So in the case of Zelda Twilight Princess (came out on both Wii and Wii U) you can download the Wii U version.
