Major tournament Sunday?

Post by Kevbozzz »

Now that the attendance has gotten completely out of hand, we should use this as an opportunity to host a major tournament on Sunday as well. Not a "consolation tournament" like we normally do, but a legit event that carries the same weight as other big tournies. Sure the mpc top 8 are excluded, but so what? We can only have a 70-person event? Obviously it would have to be a one day event, and some people would be excluded because of travel plans, but even if only half the players stick around it could still be the 2nd biggest event in the US this year.

Traveling across the country to play in TWO major tournaments is twice as appealing!

I'ld be up for playing in a LOTR event again this year on sunday.

Gogolen, you interested in running one again? If so I recommend a block format or just Movie block.

I like adding some variety to my gaming weekends, and I don't wanna play my same decks that many times in a row... :)

Kevin's idea is cool too though for those that come prepared to do that. I am staying through Monday this year instead of leaving on Sunday like i did last year.

Regular bracket MPC would take too long, unfortunately. Even if you only get 48 of the 72 that aren't in Day 2, and 2 hour matches instead of 3 hour matches, that's still 13-14 hours.

So ... like ... a consolation tournament, you just call it something else?

I agree with everything said. Just make it a ridiculously large swiss tournament.

However, as DJK said, it would need to start early. 8:30 AM kickoff.

I'm hoping for something that is perceived as more than that. People generally don't care that much about consolation events, they use goof decks, etc. But call it something else, put something good up for grabs ($?) and start it early and maybe we can squeeze a second legit tournament out of the weekend.

Like, if I beat Reid Smith at the worlds consolation event nobody cares. If I beat Reid Smith at <big event name> it means he played his best decks and I still came out on top. Let's do whatever turns "consolation" event into "big event name" event.

Maybe it's just all perception, but I propose we do whatever will make people perceive the Sunday event as important enough to give it their best.

It's all just perception, lol.

*wonders what it means when you play goof decks in the Sunday event and win...*

Legit name:

"Eric White Memorial Tourney"
proceeds go to raise funds for a charity.

I know they were thinking about doing something liek this in GA, but I don't see why it can't start here with this large crowd already congregated.

Just and idea...

We had plans to make that a tournament series unto itself a bit later in the year where people could hold locals across the country and raise money in a similar manner, but there's no reason we couldn't do it here as well.

It'd be pretty cool to have it be a double v-card event. Like the first two places get to design a main character; first place getting to choose DS or LS and 2nd getting whichever side 1st didn't take. A random player would get to design a jawa card of his choice. Could be pretty cool.

My personal opinion on it is that it seems a better tribute to him being closer to the tragic event. Also, it would be nice to rally money to get his cousin to the event, even if it is just to play in the side events and then the main event on Sunday.

tribute tourney is great idea

IDK the practicability of it for THIS event though... mainly on the idea of a fundraiser tourney, when i think most people playing in the event probably already pre-regged and get in for free or whatever
