Nationals and the Future of SWCCG...

Post by Walsetmd »

To Everyone -

For those who haven't heard yet, Nationals is in MN this year. I thought it would be in the best interest of the player community here in MN if I took the time to really promote this year’s tournament. Not only does the winner claim the title, "Best Player in the Country," but the PC has generously donated $700 worth of TRAVEL VOUCHERS to anywhere in the world as well. So if you wanna play and attend 2012 Worlds in Germany, you now have that option. And of course a major tournament wouldn’t be the same without offering a V-Card to the winner. I'm sure "Deadbody" is planning even more $$$ to go with Nationals as well. There’s a lot at stake here people…

Now the reason why I’m really excited and hope to see everyone at Nationals (Saturday) is because of the tournament being offered on the following Sunday (for those who don’t qualify for Day 2 of Nationals).

The Rosemount Open (Charity Event)

This tournament means a lot to me and I hope after you read this it will mean a lot to you too. Here in MN we have a very strong SWCCG Community. This state is a strong contender for the title of World’s Leading Area for New and Future Players. Every year we easily reach 25+ players for states, and I predict this year we will break 35. People from the region, outside of the state, and even players who no longer play, have generously donated their time and cards to make this a possibility. I am fortunate enough to have the support of the community to present this “card game” as an after school enrichment. I started doing this 12 years ago, and have had various levels of success. Our program here has produced some of the best players in the genre; Thomas F (Who went 8-0, Day 2 Worlds) and Jake N (Took 11th at 2012 Worlds and I believe the youngest player there as well), but that’s beside the point. This “game” is presented to staff and parents as an opportunity for students to increase, Math, Reading, and Critical Thinking Skills. We all know the amount of time and reading that’s required to stay competitive. Imagine having to start from scratch, and not in 1994. During every battle that takes place, I watch students add power and destiny, compare it to their opponents and calculate the difference. It is simple adding and subtracting, but in today’s age of the calculator, you’d be surprised how often I have to help them with this step. Even so, to win this game you need to always think one step ahead. The thought process of when and where to deploy, when to move, when to initiate battle, and everything else it takes to win the game can only be achieved if you develop some type of big picture thinking. It’s nice to know the students have something to compete at and be proud of, that’s focused on intelligence and not brute strength. Now, all of this is fine, but to me the real positive affect of this program is giving certain students the opportunity to socialize with their peers. At this age (8th grade) I’ve seen many students struggle at times trying to build relationships. Some are just starting to know who they are. This enrichment gives them that chance to really put themselves out there and talk to others they normally would not, for whatever reason. I’m sure we’ve all, at one time or another, felt alone or unconfident about ourselves, and this enrichment gives students a commonality to relate to one another; a bridge to cross the friendship gap.

This year, due to schedule changes, I’ve completely restructured how I approach this and the results have been amazing. I currently have 15 new players. These players have been fairly active on the forums looking for advice and help. I must say this group of 15 has shown some of the highest potential in playing ability I’ve seen in years. They are already at a level some of my previous students never achieved. This group could potentially produce a large amount of quality players if they continue to pursue this as they go through high school.

For the past 12 years, with the help of the community, I’ve always paid out of my own packet whatever was needed to strengthen and promote this opportunity here in MN. Buying Cards, Trophies, V-Cards and even giving rides to major events has always been a joy not a burden for me, considering what the enrichment gives back to these players. With Nationals here in MN, I thought it would be an excellent opportunity for you to meet many of the players who have come through the system here in Rosemount. Also, due to the large amount of players coming in I’m feeling the burden of cash a little heavier as well. I’m asking you the players, to help me by coming to Nationals, and playing in the Rosemount OPEN (Charity Event) this year. I’m asking for a donation of $20 to participate but times are tough and if you can’t afford it then show up and give what you can. No one will be turned away. Again this is not only an excellent opportunity for you to see who we have coming in and out of our MN “farm” division but a chance for them to meet you and see what other styles and techniques you can teach them.

The money raised at the Rosemount Open (Charity Event) will go towards the following which I have already purchased…

Two Boxes of Reflections III - $600
One Box of Reflections II - $250
Three V-Cards - $150
Two Trophies - $70

The box of Reflections II is used as a reward system for new players who complete their homework assignments given to them as they learn how to play, and have good grades. The 2 Boxes of Reflections III will be given away at the Rosemount Championship (an annual tournament for Rosemount only players, June 16th). One trophy will be given away at the Rosemount Open, June 10th. (and the other at the Rosemount Championship).

To clarify, the Reflections Packs, Both II and III will be given away to new players in the Rosemount community.

Not only are you helping build a stronger SWCCG community by participating at Nationals this year, but I will also be giving a TROPHY and a V-Card to the Winner of the Rosemount Open (Charity Event). And as an added draw, I will be giving away a V-Card to a lucky RANDOM Player!

Prizes: Trophy, 2 V-Cards (1 Winner, 1 Random Player)

So come and celebrate education, the community, and a competitive playing field at this year’s Nationals (Saturday, June 9th), and then play in the Rosemount Open (Sunday, June 10th)

Thanks,
Walseth

P.S. I'll be posting a list of people who are interested / committed to coming soon.

I'll be out of the country at the time, but this looks awesome, Walseth. Props for doing this and for everything you do for the game.

I hope to be able to attend, but will send some stuff for prize support in any event.

What is the best way to donate Walseth?

Thanks Everyone - For showing interest in helping out and requesting donation info.

I will for sure be posting the information if you're interested in making a monetary donation after the tournament. I think I wanna wait till then though, for a few reasons. Primarily because, I would rather have everyone be a part and see the kids here (which I think can be more valuable the cash) and come to Nationals.

Here's the latest post for you...

When I was in DC two years ago, a man was on the train proclaiming "the future of the city... is incense... cds.... and DVDs...."

I wish I had the balls to take a pic of the guy with bandoliers of mini-bottles of incense pulling a carry-on suit case filled with cheap bootleg rap and porn vids...

What does this have to do with this thread? Nothing.

But the future of SWCCG and Nationals looks bright!
