Mr. Nick goes to the other side of town (tournament report)

Post by aeneas23 »

So, now that I am fully committed (i.e. I should be committed for spending as much as I did to buy cards for this game again), I am part of a group of five players that shares deck ideas and such, but I primarily rely upon James Barnes to bounce ideas off of and playtest. We were having lots of trouble figuring out options. There are just so MANY decks out there for each side and each of them have bad matchups, but it’s hard to even figure out what all of them are or how to play differently to mitigate the bad matchups.

A few weeks before TMW James had built a version of hyperdrive based on Emil Wallen’s (from Europe), but had change up a good number of cards. We playtested that deck (with me as DS) against several different dark decks and it rolled almost everything (I won’t tell you it’s weaknesses, but you can probably figure them out :-D ). I once bouncing around several different LS ideas, but couldn’t commit, so I resolved to play this even though I’d never actually played a game with it. I had played enough games against it to pretty much know it inside and out, so I changed a couple cards and went with it. For DS, I really didn’t know what to do, but was contemplating Assassins, Destroyer Droids, or Hunt Down(v) deck James had built that centered around, of all things, Drop!(v). It is silly and fun and can blow an LS deck out much faster than they would expect. It is not uncommon to be able to end up with a power of 30+ with 2-3 characters. Problem is that I also hadn’t played that deck either; only against it.

On the day of the tournament, I go over to James’ late morning, hang out, with James, Amar, Baroni, and Aaron Nelson, play some swccg games, and hang out. I lose horribly to Amar’s TRM with my assassins deck because I again miss my assassination by tying (he draws a 5, I draw a 1). This has happened to me in 18 out of 20 tournament games (counting local league events), which I mention. Baroni proceeds to tease me about “drawing a 1 for assassination destiny” for the rest of the weekend. We eventually head out to the venue (bar) and Amar and I get into a way to involved discussion about the role of government in regulating markets and society which started with a comment from him about online poker (go figure). Anyway, we get to the event, which starts very late. James and I partners and James wants to test out some LS aliens silliness he has built, so I play DS and foolishly choose to play a version of Scott’s Mystril Racing deck (without the racing). The details don’t matter. I played communing three times and … lost three times.

Matt Schmaltz and Barry Alperstein are staying with me and Barry’s flight is running late (from a scheduled midnight arrive time), so Schmaltz play a game at the venue after everyone else leaves. Then we go pick up Barry and go home. Barry and Matt decide to stay up building decks for the next day, but I am beat and go to sleep. I wake up early, decide to play Assassins for DS, make final card decisions, type up my decklists and print them. However, even as I’m finalizing the decklist, all I can think about is “drawing a 1 for assassination destiny” and how much * I would get (from Baroni especially) if I played Assassins and it happened again. So, with 40 minutes left before we leave, I start trying to build the HD(v) Drop!(v) deck. Barry wanders out while I’m building, is surprised that I’m building a deck I’ve never actually played, and is very curious about some of the goofy cards on the decklist. So, we get to the event and then I sit around and wait while everyone else fills out decklists for the next hour. We finally get our matchups and …

Game 1—My hyperdrive (starting Rycar(v), A Remote Planet(v), and Quick Draw(v)) vs. Mike Richards Spice Ties

James and I had tested the LS against Spice Ties and Spice Ties (Herold version) had one, but we thought LS had a chance, especially if the DS player made the mistake of deploying a dark jedi to Tatooine. So I go first, have no characters in my hand, so I use the Remote Planet(v) text to deploy Obi, Padawan(v) and his saber from reserve. Mike does his spice thing and then I drain at the junkyard, upload I Hope She’s Alright with Obi, deploy Master Quigon(v) and stick using the Outskirts and start the I Hope She’s Alright damage. Mike doesn’t like that, so he comes down next turn with Maul, who encounters a Rebel Barrier. My turn I pull Obi’s journal, deploy Mace and Guardian Lightsaber, battle, and cancel his swings, I win the battle and upload Advantage with Obi, and then play it when Maul goes lost. Mike Ghhks, but I don’t care because he is now losing two during each of his move phases, one in each draw phase, one card to junkyard stacking, one card to Guardian’s Lightsaber, and whatever I can get from force drains (which he cancels a lot). I outdamage race Mike and win comfortably by like 19.

Yeah!, I beat Spice Ties.

Game 2—My HD(v) Drop (starting Emperor, Drop!(v), Gift of the Master, and Ni Chu Bi Na?(v))vs. Brian Herald’s Hyperdrive Obi Queen’s landing site start

This game didn’t go Brian’s way from the start. I have the Emperor start (James and I ultimately decided this was a mistake), so Brian goes first, deploys Obi’s Journal and Rycar(v) from hand and draws. My hand isn’t very good, so I deploy a 2-0 site and draw cards. Brian keeps Obi at the same site using an effect grabber to get yoda’s gimer stick, and and draws more cards on his turn. He then plays another one on my turn to get whatever effect allows the first weapons phase action. I deploy some more activation, use Drop and just draw a few more. Brian moves over on his turn with a tanked up Obi. I come down with Galen (Brian couldn’t find his Rebel Barriers), Black Leader, and Aurra and her gun on my turn. Brian chops up Aurra and uses sorry abou the mess combo to get rid of her. I swing with Galen and he cancels. I play Drop to put back another Aurra’s Gun and then I play Weapon Lev combo to add the 7 to my power and use Galen to add another destiny to power. Brian adds a battle destiny at the junkyard. I draw high destiny so that the dust clears with Brian at 16 power and me with 33. Brian can’t lose is tanked up Obi, so he top decks 17 cards. I lose Black Leader. Brian tries to Sorry About the Mess Galen on his turn, but I Force Field. I think he battles and I draw high leading him to top deck some more while I lose Galen. Next turn I deploy Boba Fett, Prepared Hunter, Another Galen, and a couple other things and end the game.

2-0 is a good start. Felt bad for the bad luck blowout against Brian though

Game 3—My HD(v) Drop vs. Bobby Hilbun’s odd Communing with Superficial Damage(v)

Bobby is a good player from the old Stephenville crew that just started playing some again a couple months back, but I’m hoping there is enough rust for me to win. I wasn’t paying enough attempt to Bobby’s starting cards or the X-wing cannon he deployed on Jek’s ship second turn so I went to space and got luck when Bobby missed his shot. So I wasted a few turns. I then went to his Cantina with Galen and a couple characters. We had some battles there and Bobby had to use his Ghhhk. The game was pretty slow. I eventually deployed in mass to the Cantina requiring Bobby to deploy Yoda, Chewie, and Han with Gun. I hit Han and he had to forfeit Chewie, leaving Yoda alone. The next turn I came down with more characters and hit Bobby for like 7 overflow, time was called (Bobby went first because of my Emperor start), and I had much more in life force.

3-0 is looking good.

Game 4—My Hyperdrive vs. JW Millet’s ASM

JW is another good player from the old Stephenville crew (again I’m hoping for rust) and also gave me the worst beatings I have ever taken at tournament at the only TMW that was matchplay several years ago. I start Mace with Guardian Lightsaber. JW plays A Dark Time(v), deploys the battle droid squad, and then once per games for Greivous … gulp. However, he doesn’t have any weapon protection, so Mace hits Greivous and I sorry about the mess combo him away. I end up winning the battle and Mace stays. On my turn, I consider deploying Lightsaber Prof on Mace, but assume I have a turn without Maul because he wasn’t deployed first turn, so I deploy Obi to the junkyard and draw. Unfortunately, Maul only didn’t come down last turn because Blaster Rack was in JW’s force pile, so Maul and another character come down, but Mace manages hit Maul and Maul hits Mace and the site clears. Now, my Mace’s are the Master of the Jedi Orders, but I had forgotten the text about forfeit, so I was about to think about which 7 force I was going to use before JW was nice enough to point it out to me. I’m not sure it would have mattered in this matchup because I had already bought myself two turns and killed three characters, but JW is a great guy for pointing it out. For the rest of the game, I let him take back pretty much anything he asked to do. JW finally manages to flip with Maul and tries to come after me with Galen but I have barriers and sorry about the mess and all sorts of stupid stuff and I am doing Hyperdrive damage, uploading cards and draining, which ends up being too much. He gets a card to space (I have none) to drain for free, but after Hyperdrive gets rolling, it gets too many key cards in hand and has enough characters to minimize the damage JW can inflict. FW

4-0 is the best start I’ve had at an event in like 7 years, which unfortunately can only mean one thing: tough opponent to come…

Game 5—My HD(v) Drop vs. Aaron Nelson’s WYS(v) Back Door

I’m getting nervous now as I have had similar great starts at the last few TMW only to crash and burn against the top tables. Unfortunately, this game doesn’t help me any in that respect. I’m already severely disadvantaged as I don’t have a Obi Journal canceler and he can cancel any battle he wants at the back door with That’s One(v). My opening draw has no characters, but deploy a twix, sith plan’s for Kashyyk and I don’t get anything after drawing up the rest of my force pile. Aaron pulls some stuff and draws a few cards and it is my turn again. Unfortunately, I still don’t get any characters after drawing 12 cards from force pile. Now, as Aaron pointed out, I had searched the reserve deck for Blaster Rack and we had both seen that I had 3 Vaders and 3 Galen’s in the deck, or at least I SHOULD have seen it, but I hadn’t really been paying attention as I had assumed I would get some characters in 12 cards. I can put the excess cards back with Drop!, but this game has already slipped away from me. Aaron deploys Obi and I still can’t do anything on my turn because I still don’t have any characters, so I draw and then eat a drain of 4. .. Aaron then deploys Home One with Ackbar to my Kashyyk. Realistically, the game was over by this point, but I battle him at backdoor anyway, he cancels the battle. He deploys another Jedi so my swings can’t get through Obi’s Journal and I’m not drawing great destinies (too many characters still in my reserve). A few more battles at the back door and I am out of characters again and I scoop.

OK, I’m still fairly happy with 4-1 and there are two other players with the same record, so my chances of playing Aaron again are … apparently 100%

Game 6—My Hyperdrive v. Aaron Nelson’s Watto

At first, I think this matchup might be heavily in my favor. Aaron just draws up on his turn, but I get no characters in my opening hand, so I have to use A remote planet to get Obi w/ stick and I put Lightsaber proficiency on him. Next turn, Aaron deploys General Veers(v) with Blizzard 1 and Imperial Justice(v), which sucks for me. Blizzard walkers are tough for my deck, especially given that my extra battle destinies won’t happen. I decide to deploy a jedi (can’t remember which one with Outskirts and just move over, still not sure what to do. Aaron deploys Grand Moff Tarkin(v) to Blizzard 1 and draws. Next turn I just draw. Aaron then deploys Watto and Ozzel, does his objective and gets a free ship to a system and then battles. I hit watto, but draw low destiny and Aaron Draws two battle destinies for a total of 8. I play yoda stew combo to avoid losing Obi-wan. Next turn I pull Meditation with Rycar(v) and then just draw cards. We seriously had my characters and his Blizzard 1 staring at each other for like 6 successive turns with me doing nothing. I put some high destiny used interrupts back on his turn, but Aaron decides to keep Blizzard 1 there as I can’t activate down to the high cards. Thankfully, my destiny is all very high. I deploy another character, battle, and swing at the walker and barely hit with Mediation’s +3. I win the battle, Aaron stack’s a card, and I don’t see Veers anymore. Aaron is doing some good damage to me in space, but I now start doing substantial damage with the junkyard and getting cards I need. His Mauls/Vaders with sticks get barried or clashed or disarmed and then I just get rid of them either with sorry about the mess or battling. Eventually, the game turns in my favor and I win, but Aaron made this game more of a battle than I thought it would be based on the deck matchups. He’s really good.

I was proud of this win even if the matchups favored me. I felt like I played very well.

Game 7— My HD(v) Drop vs. Matt Schmaltz’s MWYHL(v)

Well, I now come off my high from beating Aaron. James has already lost to Matt with this same matchup and we considered this a tough matchup for the deck, but didn’t think anyone would be playing testing. I get a poor draw for characters again (and activation) and get a slow start. I deploy Galen’s fighter with characters to Coruscant and land. Eventually I get Emperor, Galen, and others at the Coruscant Casino doing minimal damage b/c of projection of a skywalker. I then deploy Vader to coruscant with my plan of putting 3 characters that can draw destiny at three dagobah sites using the taking off text before realizing that my plan of using Kashykk to get to Dagobah won’t work because my ship is taking off from Corsucant, not Kashykkk. So I just don’t deploy Kashykkk (I know it is a bad idea to give him a battleground system from a game we played the night before), move vader over, and do my piddly damage. I get out Emperor’s power and have managed to do about 5 damage by the time he is finished playing solitaire. However, I now have Emperor, Mara Jade, Vader, Galen, and Dr E combo at one site. He comes down with Mace, battles me, duels away Vader with Courage(v), but I Force Field his swings, and hit Mace, and he has to houjix (and lose for to my objective). I did my piddly damage and deployed Vader again. He deploys another Jedi and begins trying to clear me off, but he is losing characters and force. Eventually he clears the site, but I come back down with a whole bunch more characters and overflow him for the win. Matt says he just wasn’t use to me drawing such high destinies (thanks to Drop) and having so much power. Frankly, I think I just confused him by playing so badly early on in the game that he played down to his competition :)

This was just gravy as I was expecting to lose this one. Afterwards, I ordered a tall beer to calm my nerves and drank the whole thing before the next game started…

Game 8-- My hyperdrive vs. Greg Shaw AOBS

I told Greg I’d just drank a whole tall beer and hadn’t eaten for like 8 hours and he said something like “oh, it’s going to be that kind of game” and I said “it didn’t have to be if he didn’t want it to be, but I was just having fun” and he said “don’t worry about it, I’ve had a couple of ciders” Agents? Uh-oh, he will be flipped probably all game (and was). He just set up first turn. I don’t remember all the details of this game … I deployed Obi to the junkyard. He deployed some guys to a DB and moved Xixor over for the flip. I drained at the junkyard and uploaded something with Obi. Then I deployed Mace with stick and senator (think) to back Obi up. Greg deploys Jodo Kast and Felterpern’s Stun Rifle(v) on him (uh-oh, bad things are coming for me) and then deploys Boba Fett. I decide to Clash Jodo cast. Greg deploys a couple more guys, battles, and captures Obi with Hidden Weapons, which I grab. I lose my senator and he loses several characters. I don’t remember the details real well right here, but I know I end up losing Mace to 4lom canceling his game text at some point. I also remember eventually clearing Fett to get Obi released, using Advantage after he lost Jabba (Greg said “wait you can use Advantage with Jabba?”) and then using disarmed on a lonely 4lom to prevent his text. Greg didn’t find his space until too late in the game. He started doing more damage once he had it out, but by then it was too late as my stacking cards and drains had been too much, so I won.

Awesome! 7-1 and I end up as the top seed after I find out Aaron lost to Robbie Hendon to go 6-2. My first final day/top 8 at an event.

I’ve already wasted a ton of time writing up this report, so I’ll just summarize my Day 2: I overthought things and chose different decks instead of just dancing with what brought me, which is what I should have done. Nobody was “teching” for my deck choices. Bobby was playing a deck that is a bad matchup for my spice ties and I made some early mistakes. I made a real game of it, but too little too late. I got a bad draw with my wookies, chose what I think was the wrong strategy, and took advantage of a mistake by Bobby to make the game respectable (but I still lost).

We eventually went to Mike’s and played some power cube, which I’d never played before. It was OK. I built an LS pile that made R2-D2 an all-star. I managed to build a deck of all aliens, CR(v) Tatooine/Jabba’s Palace with Scum and Jabba and Hutt Bounty(v) that I thought would roll, but I got blown out by Mike Richard’s pile of Captain Han, Like 5 other characters, 10 destiny adders, a bunch of destiny sixes, an arcona, and naked threepio. It was pretty fun, but the drafting and deck building took such a long time because apparently Schmaltz, Steve, and Richards!? don’t know many of the v-cards in this game

Props:
Joseph for running the events
James for helping me playtest (and for being the unlucky one with the decks we both played)
All my opponents for being super classy
Greg and Baroni for making the final
Team Stephenville for making it back and representing with Bobby’s semifinal finish
Aaron Nelson for an hour-long conversation about sports and fantasy football and our way to dropping him off at James’ place Sunday night.

Slops:
My final day deck choices

How can Mace use Courage v? It only targets Luke or Leia.

Also, props on going 7-1 on day 1!

It was obviously a Japanese foil Mace

Japanese foil Vader = spy, but only when deploying to JCC
Japanese foil Mace = Skywalker, but only when targeted by Courage Of A Skywalker v

Well, the name of the interrupt should have clued me in. :?? Maybe I was wrong about it being Mace and conflated that battle with another battle. In fact, that is probably what happened.

Yeah the first battle was Luke and the second battle was mace. I really just should have left your site alone and raced you

I can't believe you messed up one detail from 10 hours of SWCCG when you are retelling it 4 days later. ;)

Great write-up (although you got my name wrong :-D ). Nice to see a battle-oriented Hyperdrive doing well. Will have to try that version

It was actually much closer to Cedric's, since I didn't run any space, but I looked at both of their lists when making card choices.

Right. I looked through the decklist again and didn't see any space at all (which I used in my deck). Will definitely try it though
