Almosts

Post by allstarz97 »

Anyone have any cool decks they almost played? When I played Kevin day three he said he wanted to play the day three deck on day two but couldn't pull the trigger. I was all set to play ties but opted to play the more solid hoth both times. I also almost audibled to communing right before day 2.

Anyone else? What were people's preparations like? How much did the rise of slavers effect what people played for ls? Did anyone predict the meta? Was there a meta?

Dammit, I thought this was going to be the report. With sick build up (Almost x2) and then the payoff (this year). I even sat down at the coffee table and turned off the TV.

Tease.

Day 3 I should've played SYCFA mains with a 12-card start - it has a lot of trouble with LS Senate, but can hang with a lot of other decks, and the traditional SYCFA doesn't really do that well vs. TIGIH. Don't know why I didn't go that route. I also had an EOps Emperor Start deck that I was all set to play Day 3, and every time I looked at it, it seemed more and more fragile.

Basically, DS is good right now, and I wanted to play a deck that ran both EPP Maul and the Fett space package... and ended up playing a deck that had neither both days. Not really complaining, given the insane result, but there was a reason that my prep for DS started with SYCFA mains and evolved into a more normal build after losing to Senate badly.

The other LS deck I'm regretting not considering more heavily (for Day 3, I'm happy with how Day 2 went) is WYS, just because nobody would have expected it. The HDv matchup isn't really great, but you could at least get some good pressure early.

As far as prep, I was pretty locked into the TRM Revo/Race deck, mainly because I figured it could probably get me to 3-1 unless I ran into multiple Walkers decks - even the game vs. MHT's walkers, if I had taken the system, I think I could have won (obvious statement is obvious, but I had a shot at one point of the game). I also very nearly lost my * when Chu pointed out I should've played Much to Learn in the LS deck and started it vs. Walkers. Oops. The other reason to be locked into that deck was I didn't really feel great about anything else for LS - IDK if you saw what I played Day 3, but it wasn't all that. As far as slavers - if you Revo their site first turn, you're kind of golden, which meant I had as good a shot against it as I would with anything else.

For DS, I had a bunch of builds, and eventually just reverted to something I knew - the deck can lock out LS on the ground really thoroughly damage-wise, and just plink away in space. I also spent about three or four weeks bugging the ever-loving hell out of Shaw every day with card-choice and matchup questions.

This. I almost played HDv or Slavers and COT or HBv (my day 1 deck) or QMC

Probably would have gone with HDv and QMC had I picked something besides what I did

Wish I had played Communing Speeders instead of that crappy Scoundrels Kessel Run deck. The Gimer Stick tech was just too tempting not to play.

Nice. :)

On serious note I was pretty surprised you didn't come, I don't really have any reasons to support thinking you were going to show, but when you weren't there I said to myself..."wow, no hunter." Any special reson you didn't make it out?

I don't believe anyone had reasons to support thinking I would show. I think I've only gone to one event outside Colorado in the last 4 years. So I feel like it should've been a thousand times more surprising if I HAD been there.

I went into VA States a few weeks ago with TRM and Walkers thinking those were gonna be my Worlds decks. I hadn't really kept up on the meta the previous few months, and had only glanced over the Nats lists. At that event I discovered that TRM sucked and that while Walkers was good, Slavers was better. I said at the time, it was the worst I ever felt about my decks after going 6-0 at an event. So I switched to Slavers and really had no clue what to do for light. I tested TIGIH and Profit heading up to Worlds and 2 days before, I finally built Communing Speeders which I thought would be a good meta call. My first games with it in over a year were at the team tournament.

As both Casey and Justin (and everyone on team Albany, Canada etc) know I was basically 100% committed to playing Profit for day 2 except that when I couldn't beat Casey's Slavers with it I just said * it and went back to WYS V instead, which still couldn't beat Slavers. I was 100% on Walkers though I should have played Crash Landing I think.

I think I was pretty much set on the two decks I played day two. I play tested a non raiders version of wys, that was really good, I wasn't as comfortable with as raiders, so in the end, I switched back. I wish I played enough to know exactly what I wanted to do ahead of time, but I don't regret using the decks I did. If I had made day three I would have used ig88 and rebel senate likely, unless I put my first round opponent on something that throttled them badly.

I do wish I woulda used the non raider version of wys though... because for one I got eliminated game 7 by watto, which a non raider deck would have been able to come back from the early damage, but not raiders when they cost 5 each! :(

Dark for me was a lock. I felt really comfortable about my profit too, but I went 0-4 to two EOPS and two Spice which are.apparently all horrible matchups.

I really felt good, but it just didn't work out. I will say I am really motivated to find some new decks. I am definitely going to set some goals for this next.season.
