Box mapping

Post by The Franchise »

A combination of curiosity on my own part and a desire to issue a word of caution to folks new or returning to collecting swccg:

Some boxes can be mapped, so be careful when buying loose packs.

There exists a book- someone help me here as I forget the name- that breaks down a lot of the info, its based on uncut sheet layouts and the limited/non-existent randomization of packs for some sets.

Basically the back story as I recall was that the book author or someone he knew ran an FLGS back when Special Edition released. Apparently, customers would open a pack (or series of a few packs) from a certain spot in the box, and based on those rares they could tell if a certain rare was in the box (they were looking for outer rim scout). If the box had no ORS, then they would ask a new box to be opened.

Anyway I do not own the book, and I do not recall if DS2, or any EP1 or Reflection sets can be mapped. Not looking to talk anyone out of buying loose packs, and there are many great sellers here, Facebook, eBay and elsewhere that are completely honest. But as pack prices continue to increase, its probably best, in my view, that this info be out there so one is taken advantage of.

If anyone has the book, can you speak to ds2 and later sets regarding box mapping? Does anyone have a copy of the book?

Sealed product is so scarce at this point, it probably doesn't matter.

I'd venture to guess most people buying sealed stuff are not opening them, or will ever open them.

Even if you had a magic book that told you every single card in a box of [insert later set here], would you open it?

Even if a box of a particular set couldn't be "mapped", I still wouldn't buy sealed packs of that set hoping to find anything good inside, because I just assume whoever opened the box cracked packs off the top until they hit a critical mass of desirable cards, and is now selling the leftovers.

So I dug thru my stuff and pulled it out. It’s called the card rebel’s black book. It even has the maps for the reflections 3 foils. But it still looks like it’s some complicated formula because there are a ton of blanks on the chart and pages of instructions.

It also has some useful info like:
- the isd and Corvette foil appear once for every 10 of the other tournament foils.
- a full list of the reflections gold cards
- epp maul foil was on the ref 3 DS foil sheet 4 times.
- Coruscant AIs appeared only about 1.125 times per box
- Jedi council chamber is slightly more frequent on LS sheet and Dioxis is slightly more frequent on DS sheet

So are the ISD and Corvette the exact same rarity?

Assuming that the LS and DS sheets are the same rarity, then yes.
