Forum Upgrade - August 9-10

Post by JediJer »

This is just to make everyone aware that during the weekend of August 10, the forums will be down for a major upgrade.

This upgrade could take several hours, most likely to take place on Saturday, but possibly Friday night, depending on my schedule at the time.

This date was decided as it was after Set 11 was released and before Continentals.

Other areas of the website (scomp link, pdf downloads, vkit) will not be affected by this upgrade, only posting on the forums.

The new forum software will have some nice new features, such as @ mentions, embedded media from other sites (facebook, twitch, youtube, twitter, etc.) and more.

Just a reminder that the forums will be going offline tomorrow around noon (eastern) and will be down for several hours. Also, the main portion of the site (WordPress) will be updated later today, so look for those changes as well. We think you'll enjoy the new look and we hope that it will become easier to access content and information there and not have to dig through forums as much.

Also, there will be a few new little bells and whistles with the forum upgrade, so here are some of the things to look forward to next week:
"@ mention" - this will allow you to notify other users easily by using @{username} instead of having to quote them
Media embedding - this will allow us to easily post stuff from our twitter, facebook, youtube, twitch, etc. pages and will show the actual post (similar to how those other platforms display cross-platform content). It can also allow other users to easily post things from imgur, google drive (helpful for graphic design team) and many other sites.
Share on ... - this is sort of the opposite of the above. Allows users to easily share forum posts on other platforms (facebook, twitter, etc.)
RSS feed - users can create a custom rss feed for forums they want to follow
Country flags - users can select their country flag and have it appear under their avatar
Quoting "clipboard" - users will be able to highlight parts of a post (or multiple parts of a post) and be able to quote just those highlighted sections, without having to manually edit out content and add them to a special clipboard. Users can also quote multiple posts across multiple threads.
Breadcrumb dropdown - the breadcrumb menu will have a dropdown added for easier navigation
Previous/Next topic buttons - new buttons that allow you to easily move from one topic to the next
Live topic update - notifies you of new posts in a topic while viewing that topic
quoted image as thumbnail - automatically turns a quoted image into a thumbnail instead of original size
symbols/special characters - ability to add special characters (accented, umlaut, etc.) in posts and pms. Great for us Americans that don't have those symbols on their keyboard
Clipboard image - allows you to easily attach to a post any image that you copied to your clipboard
forum width - users can adjust the width of the forum to their preference
