Jeeps Does Bochum

Post by Jeeps »

In 2015, my wife and I- both high school teachers- decided to give the international teaching life a go. We went to Chennai, India. We left a lot behind and gained a lot in the process. Overall, I don't think there is much I would change. Prior to this, I had migrated away (see what I did there?) from SWCCG and relocated my interests into SWLCG. While I would never claim LCG is better than the CCG, I sort of lost touch with the game after the redone redux and just let it go... I played in one event the summer of 2016 and worked on Plo Koon(v2) during that time. I also restarted playing Magic The Gathering and thought I had given up SWCCG for good.... I gave most of my bulk cards away to Mark Walseth and didn't look much at the PC boards... That all changed in winter of 2018/19.

My father was diagnosed with acute myeloidal leukemia about the same time as John Anderson the winter after we left the US. I returned that winter to see John in Fargo after I had returned to MN to visit my father. My pattern of visiting my dad and also John who was often also receiving care in the same wing/floor was a comfort to me. They both had the same principal care physician. I would often update my dad and John on the other's status. My dad was always interested to know about John and how he was doing. I was able to get to know his parents. Share in a few games of Star Wars LCG and talk about events we would attend when John felt better. I know many people can claim John as a friend. I am one of those people. I made a point to spend time with him and Brian Herold each time I came back for the summer. John and my dad died within a week of each other. While I was planning my father's funeral, I was unable to attend John's. Not having closure is hard for the living...

In January of 2019, my wife and I were hired to work at the Zurich International School. During this time, I decided to peek at the forums and see what the scene would be like. The prospects of being part of a gaming scene excited me. Chennai, and more generally, India, has no game stores due to significant economic and licensing hurdles gaming companies face. India's per capita annual income is less than $2000 and it makes the affordability of a pack of cards nearly the same amount as a day's worth of food. Add in the fact that the Indian government taxes board games at a whopping 28%, and one can see why the state of table top gaming blows goats... When I looked at the boards, I noticed that Euro-Worlds would be a pretty doable trip for me. However, I let it slide and somewhat forgot about it. That was the case until Angelo "Gravity Shadow" Conseli Facebook Messaged me if I was going and that he would share a room with me. I was enjoying a nice IPA on my patio when the message came through and (luckily) my wife was there with me. I casually mentioned it to her and, to my surprise, she gave me the go ahead. I spent the rest of the evening looking at flights and wondering where my old decks were. I knew I would have to grease the wheels with my administration and see if I could request the time off so soon after my arrival to a new job. ZIS has new leadership both at the Director's position and at the upper/high school principal's positions. When I asked what the personal leave policy was and explained what I hoped to do with it, most of the old timers said I wouldn't have a problem. Unfortunately, there has been a "tightening" and adherence to our handbook's policies. Since this wasn't one of the limited agreed upon reasons to take personal leave, any time I took to travel to EuroWorlds would be unpaid leave, or about 170th of my base salary or about $600/day. Yuck. I felt defeated... and I started to have doubts...

I am way out of practice.
This is going to be too expensive.
What is the point?

All of these thoughts sort of came into my mind... even my wife's once supportive stance thawed as the date became a reality. "What dates again? Oh, next week? Oh... hmmm... " I am sure many of those who people have "life debts"(married) know this line of questioning and selective amnesia our spouses have when it comes to our "silly/'I don't get it' games"

Well, the good news is, I was able to strike a compromise and I am not deterred by doubts or nay-saying will keep me from attending. The tickets have been purchased, the decks sleeved, and v-slips printed! I can leave during the last class period/block of the day to catch a late afternoon flight to Dusseldorf and take a train to Bochum and hopefully arrive sometime around the start of the team tournament Friday night...

I went back to the 2008 and 2010 Worlds Threads and laughed and cringed at a lot of it. I have a great deal of fondness for this game and for the many friends and few frenemies I have made since I started playing in 1995. I am eager to reconnect with this community again.

More to come in the next few days...

Cool reading. Looking forward to meet you. Seems this Worlds will not only be great and grand, but also a Worlds full of 'feelings'. A lot of peopple have passed away apparently, and this will be one of the places to remember them by. I'm glad I can (hopefully) contribute to that.

This World is going to be great.
And indeed, it's going to be more than just SWCCG games.

So as I prepare for this event, I have been spending time "deep diving" into the Jedi Archives of this site and the "Wayback Machine" of Decktech to look up old reports, read pages of old Worlds threads, and reminisce and fill myself full of nostalgia. It's been a fun diversion. I have also been watching games on the YouTubes, listening to the chatter these games have been producing. I have also sent out a few PMs to some folks about meta and deck choices. None of this will matter, of course... but I guess one needs to try to be as prepared for their own funeral as they can be... looking forward to seeing everything everyone this weekend.

I always enjoy seeing you Peter and playing games with and against you. I'm glad you're coming.

That was a really touching story. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad.

See you this weekend!

Likewise, Joe. Thanks for the kind words. I am eager to catch up with you. I think the last time I played was when you "vidi vedi vici'd" Minnesota in 2016 on your "Areb Elspy World Tour."

See you Friday night... I will likely miss the Team Tournament start... but will gladly hangout and breathe in the "rarefied air" of so many cool people in one place... It will be a thrill!

After laughing a little too loudly at Brian Herold’s use of a Leinenkugal’s Beer case for a deck lost resulting in nearly getting kicked out of the bed I share with my wife, I feel completely and utterly lost by the meta. You may henceforth call me the “BYE of EuroWorlds.”

See you all tomorrow evening.

It’s going to be pretty hot, so that rarefied air may be transmuted into something less pleasing to the olfactory sense as the days wear on.
