Dark Deal 44's Premiere - Ref2 Cube (cubelist)

Post by Dark Deal Abuse »

SWCCG Community,

As some of you know, I only play in the Prem-Ref2 format as I strongly believe that this encompasses the original trilogy better than any other format. Reflections 2 was the last set released before Episode 1 so I wanted to do my best to construct a Cube that highlights everything up to this set (from a Cube perspective). It has only been played once in person! (thank you GEMP member COTVG and others!) so by no means is it a finished product.

I borrowed a good deal from "wtwlf123" - I took out all Episode 1 cards from his famous Classic Cube and did my best to substitute enough other cards from the Prem-Ref2 Format.

I am always open to suggestions from others - when I play tested it for a few hours it seemed surprisingly balanced! But give me a try and tell me what you think! I am hoping to playtest this more locally with some new members that I have been meeting on this site, so if you are in MI or nearby and want to play this Cube please PM me! I will travel.

**** A SPECIAL THANKS GOES OUT TO SOLIDSNCK AKA JAMES !!!! HE DID ALL HE HEAVY LIFTING including typing out all of this and working on the GEMP files!!!!! I APPRECIATE IT! ****

Nice job Kev! As I've mentioned to you (a long time ago) I used to run a lot of cube tournaments, so I thought I'd try to share some thoughts on this.

One thing that I love is that you didn't run duplicates. Some cubes run 2 copies of certain cards. I like the variety that arises when everyone is working with a mixed bag. I also like how once you see where a card is, you know that's the only copy - your next opponent won't have that card. It is a good test of skill to make use of that information.

One lesson I learned about running cubes is that if you have a bad card in there, you can run 15 tournaments and it simply won't get played ever. You may want to consider dropping the Jet Pack, for example, as it's basically a really bad skiff. I know it's tough to find good cards, though, you don't have the same card pool that I did (Ep1, virtual cards).

By the way, on LS you have the X-Wing cannon, but on DS you have the bad TIE cannon (7.2). I think you might have meant to put the good TIE cannon (9.3) to match up fairly against LS.

Thanks man ! Yeah I wanted to stick with no dupes for the strategy component ....I noticed the Cube I loosely built this off of went that route of no dupes as well and I really like it....the cube took a lot of work but I will continue to refine it.

Yeah, I don’t even remeber putting jet pack in there , I need to take it out. What would you suggest I add in off top of head ?

Good call on good and bad tie cannon , I actually think that’s a typo but I’ll double check and update it , I agree with you.

The 'bad' TIE cannon might be intended only as a result of it being able to deploy on any TIE. The good cannon has only 4 targets (although all those interceptors have their matching pilots). Might be worthwhile to include both, especially if jet pack leaves?

I don't see an option for attachments on this forum, so I posted the GEMP files to the decklist section for anyone who wants to see them in GEMP and wants to use that interface to check out the lists (or adjust for your own cube):

This is really cool, thank you for making and posting it!

I hope it gets saved somewhere in some way. It's one of those things that won't get dated due to the fixed pool of cards it draws from, and I can just see wanting this in 5 years and it not being available anymore.

It would also be cool to go through and list out all the JPSD & Ref2 stuff and alternates for those, to give it a P-DSII option.

Check out the deckbuilder thread (which allows attachments!) to see an excel file with set information included for each card. I linked that a few posts above where I noted where I put the GEMP decklists.

Not a bad idea. Jet Pack out, 7.2 and 9.3 both in.

After holding events, more inspiration will strike regarding which cards are useless and need to go. Can interview the players during/after an event about which cards they drafted that they can't see themselves ever playing.

I noticed that there are no sabacc cards, and that might be for the best. Not because they are bad, just because they are weird. My cube actually retired LS Trooper Sabacc to a "hall of fame" because it was being used so effectively when we just wanted it to be a fringe card! You could consider testing sabacc out.

You bet man, sorry it took so long. Honestly, the thanks goes to Solid. Could not have ever gotten this all formatted and typed out like he did. Been back to the office for the last month and my time with SWCCG has unfortunately been very limited.
