2020 World Championship Heat Information

Post by TacoBill »

Thank you everyone for submitting your heat preferences and for your patience. We did reach 100 players after accepting a couple late entries, so each heat will have either 24 or 26 players so as not to create byes. We were able to get about 85% of you your first choice of heat, and made sure those who didn't got their second choice. A reminder to some people (Samuel Stearns, Mike D'amboise, and Mason Gilligan) that we still need your Gemp User names to set up the leagues. All other Gemp User names can be found in the Registration thread if you would like to know someone's Gemp name.

Remember, all decklists will be due by Thursday, December 3rd at 11:59pm PST.

Saturday 4am EST: HEAT #1: Your tournament director will be EuroEmperor Tamas Papp (Yoda007).

These pods are pretty darn balanced, sort of as much as can be expected.

Well done, Taco, Gogolen, Schoenthal, and anyone else who contributed to making it.

And thank you to Taco, Schoenthal, Tamas, Matt Carulli, and Casey for volunteering your time to TD a pod next weekend!

The edited OP now says decklists are due at Friday 12:01am:
TacoBill wrote: Remember, all decklists will be due by Friday, December 4th at 12:01am EST.
Friday 12:01am is basically Thursday night. So 9:01pm PST Thursday night?*

Would it be possible going forward to have decklists due midnight PST? Probably doesn't matter to the people directing whether decklists are coming in by midnight eastern or 3am eastern, but being on the west coast having a couple extra hours in the evening after the kids are in bed helps a lot.

I only did one decklist for each side at TMW and part of that was lack of time the final night.

And I know it could be done earlier, but life and holidays, but I also figured it's a pretty minor request so I might as well throw it out; not a complaint, just a request. Setting to midnight pacific doesn't seem to hurt anyone and would help a few people out. If not, oh well, not a big deal. :)

*Setting a 12:01am time is often confusing, as this is one minute after Thursday midnight, but I bet some people will see the word Friday and think they have Friday to work on decklists. Setting a "midnight day X" is often clearer. In fact, I think it's plausible that 12:01am confused Taco himself here, and decklists are due Friday at midnight, not Thursday at midnight. But awaiting confirmation on the actual time.

Thirded, with the one caveat that I think 11:59pm is less confusing than either 12:01 or Midnight, as I know I always get confused whether "Midnight Friday" means "one minute after 11:59 on Friday" or "one minute after 11:59 on Thursday". 11:59pm Thursday is very unambiguous, although I guess if we're really going for it, 23:59 Thursday is least ambiguous.

I believe the thought behind them being due Thursday night/Friday morning was so that we could confirm that everyone had submitted lists before the pods start playing very early on Saturday morning.

I'm okay with it being midnight Thursday PST, but 9-12 is often the only focused time I have in a day (kids) outside of work. Making it midnight EST actually nukes the day since I can't guarantee I'll have time to think about them Thursday night.

So, pushing 3 hours just puts the Pacific folks on the same relative timeline as everybody else. Having them in by beginning of the day on Friday is totally reasonable.

Why not just make the deadline Friday at 4am Eastern? That's a full 24 hours in advance of the first heat.

Would appease the non-eastern time zones in the US.

As most of the Euros are playing in that heat it should be easy enough for them to remember the deadline is "1 day in advance"
